The aim of this dissertation project was to address the needs of adult Scottish Gaelic learners by developing Gràmar gu Leòr, a serious game designed to support the instruction of Gaelic grammar. Research objectives were established to define design requirements for the implementation of the game, supported by user requirements data acquired from a survey of Gaelic learners in Glasgow. From these requirements, a simple 2D maze-based puzzle game designed and developed to teach the player how to conjugate Gaelic verbs, by gradually introducing the player to new learning and gameplay mechanics over the course of play.
A playtest with adult Gaelic learners in Glasgow was conducted to evaluate the game through qualitative analysis of participant feedback, followed by a second playtest with non-Gaelic learners for comparative analysis. Results from the research indicate that Gràmar gu Leòr is enjoyable and engaging, though learning objectives were not as effective as hoped. Participants were overwhelmingly enthusiastic for the potential of games for learning Gaelic, however, and feedback received has indicated a clear direction for future work to improve and optimise the game to better meet the needs of adult learners.
